Piqua Crime Stoppers Program
The local Crime Stoppers program was established through a partnership between the Piqua Police Department and the Piqua Chamber of Commerce. The program became a reality in Piqua on October 30, 2001 when the newly formed Board of Directors held its first meeting and orientation at the Piqua Chamber of Commerce.
Crime Stoppers is a program that has been implemented world wide. The program is a partnership between members of the local community, media, and law enforcement that provide crime-solving assistance to law enforcement officials. A cash reward is offered to anonymous persons who contact Crime Stoppers with information, which assists in the arrest of felony criminals. World wide, the Crime Stoppers program has; an average conviction rate of 95%, solved over a half million crimes, and recovered over 3 billion dollars worth of stolen property and narcotics.
Why does Piqua need Crime Stoppers? Regardless of the size of the community and/or the crime rate, a Crime Stoppers program helps to improve the quality of life and provides for public safety. Crime Stoppers is based on the principle that “Someone other than the criminal has information that can solve a crime.” It was created to combat three major problems faced by law enforcement in generating information: (1) fear of reprisal, (2) an attitude of apathy, and (3) reluctance to get involved. Crime Stoppers resolves these problems by offering ANONYMITY to people who provide information about crimes and pays cash rewards when the information supplied leads to arrest.
