The City of Piqua Development Department invites citizens and business leaders to participate in the CodePIQUA Public Design Charrette being held April 16 through April 19, 2018.
The CodePIQUA project stems from a Plan It Piqua Comprehensive Plan recommendation to update the current zoning and subdivision regulations. The purpose of the project is to put into place development standards that will promote neighborhood qualities that enhance existing developments and create a sense of a place; and, to establish a thoroughfare plan that includes context sensitive standards for public right of way use and improvements.
The week-long public design charrette will begin on Monday, April 16 at 6:00 p.m. with a Hands-on Workshop that encourages attendees to share thoughts and ideas about where exactly bike and truck routes should be located and what residential and commercial development patterns and building standards they find most desirable. On Tuesday, April 17 at noon, a Lunch and Learn will highlight best practices for creating street and trail networks that effectively serve the needs of all modes of transportation. On Wednesday, April 18 at noon, a Lunch and Learn will highlight how communities are using easy to read and understand text and illustrations to encourage the development of residential and commercial projects that reflect the characteristics and preferences of the local community. There will also be Open Design Studio sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday and also Thursday morning. Anyone is welcome to drop in during the Open Design Studios to meet with the project team and discuss items of particular interest in more of an informal one on one setting. The Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning sessions are all being held at the Fort Piqua Plaza Banquet Center located at 308 N. Main Street. On Thursday April 19, at 5:00 p.m., and again at 6:30 p.m. there will be an Open House/Presentation highlighting what was discussed during the week-long charrette and the initial Piqua transportation plan and urban form sketches that were prepared during the open design studio sessions. The Thursday evening session will be held in the Commission Chambers located on the 2nd floor of the City of Piqua Municipal Government Complex located at 201 W. Water Street.
Code Studio, the consultant engaged to provide the services necessary to complete this project, will facilitate the week-long charrette. Code Studio is a recognized leader in preparing codes that promote community values and generate desirable development outcomes. Assisting Code Studio with the project will be Nelson/Nygaard, a leader in developing transportation systems that promote broader community goals of mobility, equality, economic development, and healthy living; and, Gamble Associates, an architecture and urban design firm that focuses on community redevelopment and neighborhood revitalization.
