[ARCHIVED] City concludes Small Business Grant Program with final project at Submarine House

Downtown 06252019-1-6

The City of Piqua has officially concluded its Small Business Grant Program with the completion of exterior improvements at Submarine House, a newly opened location of the Dayton-based restaurant chain. The business celebrated its grand opening June 16, in downtown Piqua.

Launched in 2022, the grant program was designed to support local small businesses through matching grants, with the grant amount available increasing as the owner contribution increased. The program aimed to stimulate private investment, improve visual appeal and enhance the viability of Piqua’s small business spaces.

Submarine House, located at 311 N. Main St., used the grant to fund a series of improvements, including new signage, exterior painting, upgraded doors and patio enhancements. The business matched the grant with its own investment, as required by the program.

“The improvements at Submarine House represent exactly what this program was intended to accomplish — supporting small businesses while enhancing the overall functionality and attractiveness of the buildings they occupy,” said Chris Schmiesing, economic development director for the City of Piqua. “We’re proud of our local businesses and very much appreciate the positive impact they have on the community.”

In total, the Small Business Grant Program awarded more than $498,000 to assist 23 businesses in completing improvement projects. Projects included façade restorations, window replacements, interior alterations, electrical and mechanical upgrades, roof repairs, signage installations and other property improvements.

With the completion of the Submarine House project, the City has officially closed out the Small Business Grant Program. City officials remain committed to supporting local entrepreneurs and continue to offer economic development assistance through revolving loan funds and other programs.
