The City of Piqua celebrated the opening of new pickleball courts at Pitsenbarger Park & Sports Complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, October 8.

The Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce led the ceremony, which included remarks from City officials and a community mini-clinic hosted by the Miami County Pickleball Association (MCPA). Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, players were invited to try out the courts for the first time.

MCPA will host a free comprehensive beginners’ clinic on Saturday, October 11, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the new courts.

Community input played a key role in shaping the pickleball court project. In April, the City hosted a community meeting to gather feedback from residents on the design and construction of the new courts.

“This project reflects the City’s commitment to recreational opportunities and healthy lifestyles,” City Manager Paul Oberdorfer said. “We are grateful for the public input that helped shape the design and look forward to seeing these courts enjoyed for years to come.”

The City received a $25,000 grant from the UVMC Community Benefits Fund to install lighting for the new courts, expanding the scope of the project. The addition of lighting will extend hours of play and improve accessibility for residents to enjoy these courts safely and more frequently.

Demolition of the former tennis courts and fencing started in June, and construction began in early July.

The pickleball courts are open daily from 7 a.m. until dusk. Lighting installation is scheduled for 2026.
