PIQUA, OHIO — The City of Piqua launched a new brand identity to the community during a City Commission work session on Tuesday, October 14.

The presentation included a detailed explanation of the research methodology that led to the City of Piqua’s logo, color scheme and messaging, as well as the unveiling of a lighted sign behind the Commission Chambers dais and giveaways for the public to take and share the story of Piqua’s unique identity.

“Every city needs a cohesive brand that positions that city as a desirable place to live, work and play,” Vice Mayor Jim Vetter said. “We all want Piqua to continue to improve, to strengthen our sense of community and be a place we’re all proud to call home. A key piece of that success will come from having a strong brand identity and brand story.”

1R4A4908City Manager Paul Oberdorfer shared background on the decision to prioritize the brand development process now, as Piqua continues to grow and progress.

"This is a fresh chapter in Piqua’s history and illuminates how we will tell the story of who we are into the future," Oberdorfer said. "Our visual identity and messaging needs to match the pride, values and momentum we see every day in our neighborhoods, at local events and in our business community."

City leadership and a branding strategist engaged hundreds of Piqua residents, elected officials and employees in the research that was used to develop the City’s key messaging and inform the visual brand elements. The process included 166 responses to the online community survey, 12 one-on-one, in-depth interviews and half-day workshops with a stakeholder group composed of community members and City staff.

"The brand development process has been truly collaborative and inclusive," Public Information Officer Michelle Perry said. "We listened to and learned from residents through the outreach engagements. The brand has been uncovered through various methods of research and analysis of the themes that emerged."

As the key visual representing the City’s newly refined brand story, the new Piqua logo balances an approachable feel with confidence and energy. The designed U is engaging and can be viewed as both a smile and a handshake. The arch over Piqua can be tailored for various applications, using either “the city of” or “welcome to,” or used without the arch as appropriate.

The City’s new tagline — It’s Happening Here — tells the story of exciting activity in Piqua as well as the progress the community is experiencing.

“It’s true — It’s Happening Here, right here in Piqua,” Vice Mayor Vetter said. “And we all have a critical role to play in helping to be the best Piqua we can be.”
