[ARCHIVED] Preparing your home for extremely cold temperatures

2 square

With extremely cold temperatures forecasted, the City of Piqua would like to remind residents to protect their private water service lines, water meters (if inside) and pipes in their home from freezing.

In previous years’ cold weather events, most of the issues were with pipes in basements that lacked heat. If you have not already done so, please winterize your home as soon as possible. Being preventative can save you time and money.

The City of Piqua advises residents to locate their master valve for water lines inside of homes and businesses proactively. If there is a burst pipe inside of the home, you may shut water off to the entire home by turning this valve. Additionally, disconnect and store hoses and turn outdoor spigots and valves off to avoid freezing pipes.

Please note that City crews will only respond to breaks in water mains, as well as conduct emergency shutoffs. City crews will not respond to or work on any private water service lines beyond the curb stop box that are frozen.

As a reminder, if your water meter freezes, the replacement and/or repair is the responsibility of the property owner or tenant.  The City encourages tenants alert landlords as soon as possible if plumbing issues arise.

To report a concern regarding a City of Piqua water main, please call the Underground Division at 937.778.2018 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday to Friday or the Water Division at 937.778.2090 after 3 p.m. and on weekends and holidays.
