1R4A6132

The Piqua Fire Department hosted a live fire training exercise this month at the Piqua Public Safety Regional Training Center as a required component of a live fire instructor certification course offered through the Apollo Career Center of Lima, Ohio.

The training satisfied all requirements necessary for participants to achieve their 1403 Live Fire Instructor Certification in the state of Ohio.

The certification course prepares experienced firefighters to safely design, coordinate and lead live fire trainings in accordance with global, state and environmental regulations and recommendations. As part of the program requirements, participants must complete and oversee a supervised live burn exercise.

Eight Piqua firefighters completed the training, bringing the department’s total number of certified live fire instructors to 15. Firefighters from the Troy, Tipp City and Huber Heights fire departments also completed the training.

During the training, participants applied advanced instructional techniques, managed fire behavior scenarios and demonstrated competency in conducting live fire evolutions while maintaining strict safety standards.

The exercise simulated realistic fire and smoke conditions encountered during emergency response operations. Skills practiced included fire control, victim rescue procedures, incident command and safety officer roles, accountability as well as general instructional oversight during interior structural firefighting scenarios.

Fire ignition materials used during the training included straw and heat-treated wood pallets. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Regional Air Pollution Control Agency issued permits for the exercise.
