The season is now upon us for increased thefts of packages from porches. We had two packages stolen from porches last week. The Piqua Police Department would like to engage with our citizens on a new theft-deterrence program here in Piqua.
Piqua Chief of Police Bruce Jamison stated, “We know our citizens appreciate some of our previous decoy efforts and we think we will find some citizens that will want to participate with this program.”
The department has obtained tracking equipment to allow us to track shipping packages left on a porch or visible to the public, after it has been stolen by an opportunistic criminal. We’d also like to suggest ways for our citizens to avoid becoming victims, such as:
- Installing video surveillance and warning signs where packages are delivered.
- Consider installing a “parcel box” to accept deliveries and then be locked.
- Schedule packages to arrive when someone is home.
- Send packages to a secure location rather than leaving them unattended.
Piqua residents who would like to “host” a decoy package for us are asked to email firstname.lastname@example.org to make arrangements. We are likely to target areas where thefts are occurring, so we would like to have a database of potential hosts around the city.
Everyone is encouraged to share the existence of this bait package program extensively. We hope it serves as a deterrent to the “porch pirates” that spread the opposite of holiday cheer in Piqua.
