Responsibilities
The Piqua Sanitation Department is responsible for the collection of solid waste materials including trash, bulk items, yard waste, and recycling from residential houses, buildings and small businesses. The Sanitation Department provides weekly collection for these materials.
Operations
The Sanitation Department begins daily collections at 7:00 a.m. The department maintains a fleet of 6 trucks to collect refuse, recycling, bulk items (furniture, appliances, etc.), and yard waste. These items all have to be disposed of in separate locations, so separate trucks may be utilized for each category of debris. Regular refuse and trash is taken to the Miami County Transfer Station; Yard waste is taken to the city’s compost facility; Bulk metal items are taken to a scrap metal facility; and the recyclable items are taken to a material recovery facility for recycling.
The department observes the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day. Collection will be delayed one day after a holiday with Friday’s stops being collected on Saturday.
