The Chief of Police is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the department and is responsible for the overall efficient and effective management and administration of the department.
Under the direction of the Chief of Police, the Deputy Chiefs of Police are the second highest-ranking official within the department. The Deputy Chiefs of Police are responsible for efficient and effective operations of the department.

Chief Rick Byron was promoted to the position of Chief of Police in 2019. He has served with the Piqua Police Department since 1999. During his time with the Piqua Police Department he has served as a Patrolman, School Resource Officer, Detective, Lieutenant/Watch Commander, and now as the Chief of Police. He was also the Crisis Negotiation Team Commander and a member of the Tactical Response Team. He is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) and the Certified Law Enforcement Executive (CLEE) program through the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police.
