Local groups determined to keep Miami County streams and lakes as healthy as possible see an opportunity to make a difference in Piqua.  The Middle Great Miami River Watershed Alliance, in partnership with Pheasants Forever, Protecting Our Water-Ways, and the City of Piqua are hosting a community meeting on Monday, November 27th at 5:30 pm at the Piqua Municipal Government Complex (201 W. Water Street) to discuss their plans to address challenges facing local waters.

“Hundreds of urban and agricultural acres in and outside of Piqua feed the water system that tens of thousands of local residents rely on for drinking water.  While our new water plant does an exceptional job of removing impurities, our job would be easier and less expensive if the source water was cleaner.”  Stated Sky Schelle, Piqua’s Water Quality Coordinator.

Randy Kirchner of the Middle Great Miami River Watershed Alliance added, “area streams and lakes are also being degraded by runoff filled with sediment and nutrients.”

The Alliance is writing a watershed plan to document the current condition of local waterways and create goals and objectives to improve them.  If approved by the state, the plan will allow the partners to apply for grants to fund projects that may improve water quality.  The purpose of the community meeting is to introduce the public to the challenges facing their waterways and the opportunities that exist if grants are found.  Some of those opportunities may include cost sharing for reduced tillage, grass waterways, and other agricultural practices as well as urban practices such as stream bank stabilization and education programs to reduce lawn chemical use.

The meeting is open to the public and no RSVP or registration is required.
