When residents and visitors come downtown on Friday night for Mainstreet Piqua’s annual Christmas on the Green event they will see downtown Piqua’s trees beautifully decorated with lights but will also see the trees laden with gloves, hats and scarves.  The St. James Episcopal Church’s knitting circle is responsible for the additional ‘decorations’ and hope that those who are in need of a pair of gloves, a hat or scarf will help themselves to what they need. This is the second year that church has done the give-away and see it as a natural outreach of their congregation.

“Last year there were gloves, hats and scarves on the trees but it took a while for people to figure out why they were there,” says Lorna Swisher, Executive Director of Mainstreet Piqua. “The church wanted to surprise people with the gifts and they certainly made a huge impact.” The winter wear items were hanging from trees and in all there were over 300 items taken during Christmas on the Green last year.

“We so appreciate the church making this annual community tradition even more special by providing the hats, gloves and scarves for our neighbors in need.” Says Lorna Swisher. “They work all year through to have enough to give away during the Christmas on the Green celebration.”

St. James Episcopal Church embraces their role as one of downtown’s many churches. “Throughout the year the church volunteers deliver snacks and water bottles to businesses throughout the downtown area” Says Swisher. “It is so fun getting a delivery of crackers or potato chips by a friendly face from the St. James.” says Swisher.

Christmas on the Green is Friday from 6 – 9 p.m. and will primarily happen on Main and High Streets. The trees with the winter wear will be in the 300 and 400 blocks of N. Main Street.
