At approximately 8:00 a.m. today, Piqua Police Officers were dispatched to 1000 Park Avenue Apartment #1 on a report that the neighbor from apartment #2 broke in and assaulted the male resident with nun chucks. The victim of this assault and his girlfriend (Apt 1) were engaged in an argument when the neighbor with the nun chucks (Apt 2) reportedly broke through their door. The victim sustained head injuries but refused EMS transport to the hospital.
The resident of apartment #2 was known to our department as a self-identified sovereign citizen who refuses to comply with our requests and orders based on these beliefs. He is identified as Lenvil C. Persinger, Age 43, 1000 Park Ave. Apartment #2, Piqua. As recently as October 2017, Persinger brandished a firearm to a police officer as she was attempting to investigate a loud music complaint at apartment #1. This morning, Persinger refused to talk to the investigating officers regarding the allegation of the assault with nun chucks.
Based on an assessment of the risks present, the Piqua-Sidney Tactical Response Team was dispatched and a search warrant was obtained for Apartment #2. At all times, the threat was contained to 1000 Park Avenue Apartments 1 and 2, with slight risk to nearby exposures.
At approximately 11:15 am, after contact with negotiators and tactical operators from the response team, Persinger was taken into custody with no further injuries sustained by anyone involved. He is currently incarcerated at the Miami County Jail on the following charges – Aggravated Burglary, Felony 1; Felonious Assault, Felony 2; Criminal Damage, Misdemeanor 2; and, Obstructing Official Business, Misdemeanor 2.
We appreciate the residents of the surrounding neighborhoods and motorists who were inconvenienced as we rendered the area safe for the duration of the incident, as well as the Sidney Police Department and Miami County Sheriff’s Office for their direct assistance to the peaceful resolution.
