The City of Piqua Water Division earlier this week hosted representatives from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Southwest District Office for a tour of Piqua’s Water Treatment Plant.

Among the attendees were new hires at the agency who wished to expand upon their knowledge of water treatment works, specifically the treatment of surface water such as rivers and lakes.

The Southwest District Office chose the Piqua Water Treatment Plant for the tour because of its modern construction and the inclusion of granular activated carbon, considered a “best available treatment technology,” in its treatment process. Discussions on the tour detailed how carbon adsorption in combination with the treatment strategies of coagulation, softening, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection will keep Piqua’s drinking water safe and compliant for the foreseeable future.
